Senna is a shrub found throughout India, Pakistan and China. Its name is derived from the Arabic word “sena,” and it has been used in ayurvedic and unani medicines since the ninth century. The shrub grows to a height of approximately two feet, with green stems and pods and yellow, scoop-shaped leaves. The leaves and pods, or fruit, are used medicinally.

Dried senna leaves

The active substances in senna leaves and fruit are called sennosides. These molecules are converted by bacteria in the colon into another substance, rhein-anthrone, which has two beneficial effects. First, it stimulates colon activity, which speeds bowel movements and improves digestion. Second, it increases fluid secretion.

Traditionally, senna was used as a laxative and was considered a “cleansing” herb because of its cathartic properties. More modern studies have found that senna is useful in treating constipation, whether it is caused by pharmaceuticals or natural means. It may also be used to treat skin conditions such as ringworm and acne.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have approved senna as a non-prescription drug to treat constipation. The most common doses are:

  • Children: 8.5 milligrams (mg) per day to cause a single bowel movement
  • Children over 12 and adults: 17.2 mg per day, with no more than 34.4 mg each day
  • Older adults: 17 mg per day
  • Postpartum pregnancy: 28 mg per day, divided into two doses

Senna leaves in Traditional Chinese Medicine

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), alexandrian senna leaves are plants that belong to the ‘Purgative herbs that drain downward’ category. The herbs in this category are those whose main purpose is to treat constipation. The fact they’re ‘purgative’ means that they do so by removing excess Heat in the Intestines and/or Stomach. As such all herbs in this category are Cold in nature, in order to cool the Heat.

Furthermore Alexandrian senna leaves are plants are Cold in nature. This means that alexandrian senna leaves typically help people who have too much “heat” in their body. Balance between Yin and Yang is a key health concept in TCM. Those who have too much heat in their body are said to either have a Yang excess (because Yang is Hot in nature) or a Yin deficiency (Yin is Cold in Nature). Depending on your condition alexandrian senna leaves can help restore a harmonious balance between Yin and Yang.

Alexandrian senna leaves also taste Bitter and Sweet. The so-called “five elements” theory in Chinese Medicine states that the taste of TCM ingredients is a key determinant of their action in the body. Bitter ingredients like alexandrian senna leaves tend to have a cleansing action on the body by clearing heat, drying dampness and promoting elimination via urination or bowel movements. On the other hand Sweet ingredients tend to slow down acute reactions and detoxify the body. They also have a tonic effect because they replenish Qi and Blood.

The tastes of ingredients in TCM also determine what organs and meridians they target. As such alexandrian senna leaves are thought to target the Large intestine. In TCM the Large Intestine receives the “impure” parts of the digested food from the Small Intestine, absorbs the remaining fluids and excrete the remainder as feces.
